Burma used to be the Hub of air travel in south East Asia until the early 60s. Rangoon, was the best air port in south east Asia and all the major air lines like Pan Am, North West, KLM, BOAC, Air France etc operated direct flights to Burma. People from Thailand, Singapore etc who wanted to travel to Europe have to travel first to Burma to take the transit flight.
Burma is ruled by a military regime that has shown blatant disregard for these ideals by violently repressing democracy and its own citizens. . Burma was administered as a province of India until 1937 when it became a separate, self-governing colony; independence outside of the Commonwealth was attained in 1948. Gen. NE WIN dominated the government from 1962 to 1988, first as military ruler, then as president, and later as political kingmaker.
